In February 2024, the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) took a strong stance against illegal online gambling operations targeting Florida residents. FGCC’s executive director, Ross Marshman, highlighted Florida’s limited legal gaming businesses, with only 14 legal slot machine businesses in the state. He emphasized that the only lawful online sportsbook in Florida is Hard Rock Bet, managed by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Marshman urged Floridians to exercise caution when engaging in online betting activities, stating, “Bettor beware.”

The FGCC underscored the economic impact of legal gaming operations, noting that they generate crucial tax revenue for the state. In 2024, the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund of Florida received over $240 million in tax revenue from state-licensed slot machine businesses. Over the next five years, Florida is projected to receive at least $2.5 billion from the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Legal Action Against Illegal Operators

Other states are also taking action against illegal gambling operations. The Michigan Gaming Control Board issued a cease-and-desist notice to MyBookie, while Bovada has withdrawn from several states, including New Hampshire, due to regulatory pressure. Prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and the FGCC have highlighted the importance of amending existing laws to address the widespread issue of illegal betting operations across Florida.
